| Seasonal variation of the food items of the "bagre-urutu", Genidens genidens is analysed based on monthly samples between September, 1993 and April, 1995 at the Guaratuba Bay, coast of Paraná. The stomach contents of 105 fish is analysed by the Occurrence Frequency Method and 41 of these have also been analysed by the Volumetric Method. Matching both methods using the Preponderance índices, a larger incidence of decapods is determined, followed by other crustaceans, molluscs, polychaets, fish, and plant material. The data show the existence of a strong seasonal variation in the diet. |

| The reproductive cycle of the marine catfishes Genidens genidens Valenciennes, 1833 and Cathorops spixii Agassiz, 1839 in the Sepetiba Bay, was assessed by an annual period of sampling from October 1993 to September 1994. The fishes were caught by standardized otter trawl and environmental parameters of temperature, salinity and transparency of water were recorded at each sampling. Five gonadal phases were described, based in macroscopic observations. Changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and in the percentual of stages of gonadal development showed that G. genidens spawns in Summer/early Autumn, coinciding with low salinity and high temperature and transparency. | Marine catfish (Ariidae) are abundant resources in otter trawl fisheries carried out at Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro (Lat. 22º54, 23º04'S; Long. 43º34\ 44º10'W). Relative abundance and distribution were assessed, based in 158 fishing sampling at seven sites in the Bay, between July-1993 e June-1996. Five species were recorded in the following abundance rank order: Genidens genidens (Valenciennes, 1839), Caihorops spixii (Agassiz,1829), Sciadeichthys lunisculis (Valenciennes, 1840), Nelunia barba (Lacépède, 1803), and Bagre marinus (Mitchill, 1814), the latter have been caught in only two samples. | The article describes the feeding habits of the catfish Sciades herzbergii caught in the Crabs Island (Ilha dos Caranguejos), an important coastal area of the Maranhão state, Brazil. A total of 167 individuals were collected: 110 females and 57 males. All the stomach contents were identified to the closest taxonomic level. The frequency of occurrence, biomass, numerical frequency and index of relative importance (IRI) of food items were determined for both genders. Stomach repletion was predominant, demonstrating good feeding conditions for S. herzbergii. The main alimentary items in the diet of this catfish were crustaceans, fish, oligochaets and polychaets, and the decapods crustaceans were the most representative. |

| The purpose of this study was to investigate Na+, Cl-, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ levels in the plasma of freshwater and marine/estuarine teleosts collected at different salinities (0 to 34) from the estuarine and freshwater portions of the São Gonçalo channel in Southern Brazil. Any relationship between plasma ion levels and salinity and the capacity of ionic regulation of teleosts found at three or more different salinities (Genidens barbus and Micropogonias furnieri) was also investigated. | La familia Ariidae en el Caribe colombiano incluye cinco especies bien conocidas (Ariopsis bonillai, Arius proops, Bagre bagre, B. marinus y Selenaspis herzbergii) y al menos dos no descritas del género Cathorops. En este trabajo se registra por primera vez la presencia de Arius grandicassis Valenciennes, 1840 en esa región, basado en tres ejemplares de 342 - 495 mm de longitud total, capturados en aguas costeras de San Lorenzo de Camarones (Guajira), ampliando así el ámbito de distribución de la especie. También se incluye una clave para la identificación de las especies de la familia Ariidae presentes en el área. |

| A variação no padrão das placas de dentes vômero-palatinas de Genidens barbus e Genidens machadoi é revista e as espécies redescritas com base na análise de 46 caracteres morfológicos. Genidens machadoi pode ser diferenciada de Genidens barbus pela: margem lateral do esfenótico recortada (vs. margem lateral do esfenótico retilínea); escudo cefálico mais estreito na região dos esfenóticos (vs. escudo cefálico mais estreito na região dos frontais); distância entre a margem lateral do escudo cefálico, na porção mais estreita, e a margem posterior da órbita cabendo 0,681,0 na menor largura do escudo cefálico (vs. 1,21,7); menor largura do processo occipital, na porção posterior, cabendo 2,03,4 no comprimento do processo occipital (vs. 3,34,7); um ou dois pares... |

| Two species of Lepeophtheirus Nordmann, 1832 parasitic on the ariid fish Netuma barba Lacépède, 1803, and the bothiid fish Paralichthys sp. from the coastal zone of the State of Rio de Janeiro, are redescribed and illustrated: L. bagri Dana, 1852, and L. monacanthus Heller, 1865. New junior synonyms for these species are proposed: L. marginatus syn.n., L. christianensis syn.n. and L. platensis syn.n. of L. bagri and L. unispinosus syn.n. of L. monacanthus. |

| Bagres marinhos (Ariidae) são os mais abundantes recursos pesqueiros em arrastos de fundo na Baía de Sepetiba, RJ (Lat. 22º54-23º04S; Long. 43º34-44º10W), que é uma importante área de criação e alimentação de uma grande variedade de espécies de peixes na fase juvenil. Padrões espaciais e sazonais de distribuição dos bagres marinhos, baseados no número e no peso de peixes por arrasto, foram analisados com base em 151 amostragens de arrasto de fundo, em sete locais da Baía de Sepetiba, entre julho de 1993 e junho de 1996.
